  1. Investigation, political jibes escalate in PNB scam

The Enforcement directorate undertook multiple searches and seized diamond, gold jewellery worth Rs 5,100 cr in relation to the money laundering case against billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi, even as MD and CEO of the Punjab National Bank Sunil Mehta said that bank will take action in full capacity in the 11,400 crore scam. After it became clear that Nirav Modi had left country on 1st January, war of words began between BJP and the Congress. The BJP took offence at Congress calling him ‘Chhota Modi’, saying that scam happened at the time of UPA government.

  1. PM Modi campaigns in Tripura 

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitched the BJP’s development agenda and criticised the Manik Sarkar left-front government in a rally in poll-bound Tripura. He questioned the Tripura government for not ensuring minimum wages and not implementing the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission. “Communist party don’t believe in ‘gantantra’ (democracy) and believe in “gun-tantra,” said Modi.

Cyril Ramaphosa was elected as the fifth South African president in the post-Apartheid era in the Parliamentary election, after Jacob Zuma resigned as the pressure grew upon him in the wake of long-growing corruption allegations.

19-year-old Nikolaz Cruz, who killed 17 people in Florida shootings, was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder, even as the questions on law enforcement and school authorities grew whether they ignored the signs.

  1. Indian Railways set to hire 89,000 employees

Indian Railways has launched one of its biggest recruitment drives, to hire 89,000 Group C and D employees, including assistant loco pilots, technicians, gang men, switchmen, trackmen, cabin men, welders, helpers and porters. In Group D, vacancies are open for candidates who have passed Classes X or have an ITI (industrial training institute) diploma.

  1. 2 Wing Commanders killed in aircraft crash

Two Indian Air Force pilots were killed after a microlight aircraft they were flying in crashed in Majuli district of Assam. The deceased were identified as Wing Commanders Jai Paul James and T Vats. The aircraft had taken off from Jorhat Air-force station around noon on a routine border sortie. The crash took place at Darbar Chapori, a sand bar in the Brahmaputra, where there is no human habitation.

  1. 28 year Woman dies as her hair gets entangled in go-kart

In a bizarre accident, Puneet Kaur, a resident of Bhatinda district, lost her life as her hair got entangled in a go-kart while taking a ride in Pinjore gardens. Her scalp got peeled off in a matter of seconds as the speed of kart was quite high She was declared brought dead in the hospital.

  1. Pregnant woman loses baby allegedly after CPI (M) leader’s assault

A four months pregnant woman lost her baby as she had to undergo forced abortion after being assaulted by six people, including a CPM functionary, over a land dispute. The accused have been arrested and remanded in judicial custody. The CPI (M) distanced itself from the incident, saying it was a private dispute.

Three labourers were killed and seven injured when a four-storey building under construction collapsed in Bengaluru’s Kasavanahalli locality.

  1. New sponsor for Indian hockey team

Indian men’s and women’s hockey team have got a new sponsor for the next 5 years – the Odisha government. In the past, Odisha has produced some of India’s top hockey players including Dilip Tirkey, Ignace Tirkey and Lazarus Barla.
